sliding VSR
Post by iconPost by Mcfly BSP | 2021-02-12 | 00:38:30

Hi !

Here is a sliding VSR that takes into account everyone's best races and not all of everyone's races. It's a sliding ranking over 2 years. Are counted:

- the 12 best results of the last 12 months. These points fully count.
- the 12 best results obtained 13 to 24 months ago. These points count halfway.
- the points obtained more than 24 months ago no longer count.

The sum of these points determines the rank of each boat.

Each race gives 1000 points to the 1st boat, 999 pts to the 2nd ... 1 point to the 1000th.

Update of this ranking on the 1st day of each month.

Looks like a quality system. I hadn't realized how often Freizh was winning. Very impressive.

Hello, the idea is nice, but I think it favors too much the top guys (only the top 0.1% of participants to vendee globe would be ranked with this ranking). I almost never finish in the first 1000 (first because I'm a beginner, 2nd because I never buy full packs), so I have almost no chance to be in the ranking although I participate regularly.

Also, the big races like Vendee Globe are counted the same as small races...
One suggestion : what about considering 50% of the fleet instead of 1000. Then you would get more points on big races, and it would be less difficult to be ranked.
Also, I like the logarithmic approach someone suggested, to give more weight to the first places.

Mr McFly,
I would like to answer to your proposal for a new VSR system but firstly, let me tell you my recognition for the great work your are doing. I have chosen to discuss your system (despite my English) through this forum instead of the VR forum which is far too much polluted by non-related messages to the subject.
I saw your new version with the last year 12 best results at 100% and the previous one at 50 %. I fully agree with this proposal. I fully agree also to take into account the 12 best results, no more, no less.
But I also fully agree with the two remarks made by Pierre:
1) Several players in my team are very often ranked in between 1000 and, say, 5000 and even if they appreciate your idea, they know that they will be out of the general classification. 50% of the fleet is far too much in terms of work for you. What would be the limit for you to avoid hours spent to collect the datas. I suggest either 2000 or better 3000. Would it be possible ?
2) And second point, yes it is not realistic to count on the same level a Vendée Globe and say a record between Marseille and Carthage. But instead of multiplying the number of grades for races and records, it would be better to keep it simple with only two coefficients. Points would be multiply by 2 only for races well known all over the world in real life (not depending of the duration): VG, JV, Jacques Vabre, Rhum, Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, may be stages of Figaro. For all other races, no coefficient will be applied.
In any case, congratulations.

Sorry, I did not realize that you are doing the data collection manually... so indeed, I understand you don't want to take 50% of the fleet!
Could be simpler to apply a simpler coefficient like Asthojuma suggests

Hello !

The number of boats to be classified is not a problem. The problem is that my laptop is already suffering with 1000 boats per race. Sorry, I will not exceed 1000. If I worked for VR with more substantial means, I would opt for the first 20,000.

For the coefficients, I understand, 2 would be good but I do not see myself deciding for each race if I put it x1 or x2 .. And despite that, opinions will always be divided. Personally, I had thought of VG, TJV, J.Vabre and that's it. In short, I remain in my idea of keeping it simple, coef x1 for all races or records. Sorry

But there is a bigger problem: the race rankings are largely wrong. boats are missing which allows other boats to have a rank that does not correspond to their record.

2 examples:
- Stripezero_A-ITA is 1000th in the ranking but 1008th in his record in this race

- Spin22 / INC-BUREAU VALLEE finished second in the first stage from Les Sables to Horta. But problem, he disappeared from the classification of the race ...

Basically the VSR rank I did is pretty much correct as of October 2019. Before, unfortunately, the race rankings are riddled with errors. I don't know what to do yet. I am not very interested in any sort of ranking but wouldn't this be a collaborative task?
Distribute the 20000 first boats (if they do exist) between 20 users (or more) and collect the data, filter and publish...

The problem is especially that classifying 20,000 boats over nearly 50 races requires having a very powerful computer. Mine is clearly not. My excel file is already struggling to respond with 1000 boats.

Would't then be the a better solution to use a Python or Php app ?
Maybe I can help...

Some people append their team name to the end of their boat name.

Thanks BooBill,
Is there a directory of team-mame-extensions ?

If you click on a boat and then click the avatar in the boat's card, you can see info on his race history and the full team name.
